Uche Fuels Comfortable Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finland's KuPS ought to be sufficient to seal direct passage to the knockout stages, especially following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched even for a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Control Established from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, fizzing a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw key players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
The youngster was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
